Nontraditional DIVAS: DIVA Tech gives girls a look at different careers

With hot glue burning their fingers and grease smearing their faces, these girls are definitely not your traditional divas.
In its 12th year, DIVA Tech brought girls in grades 8-11 from all over the region to the Northwest North Dakota Career and Technical Center at Minot High School-Magic City Campus Saturday for a full day of sessions offering a look at many nontraditional career opportunities.
There were six sessions spanning the morning and afternoon. The morning sessions were auto body, which had girls airbrush a car panel; computer, where they set up wireless networks and disassembled/reassembled computers; and construction, where they learned to build walls and install windows. The afternoon sessions were auto mechanics, which taught girls how to service a car, change a tire, and test fuses and fluids; welding, where they welded and used a plasma arc cutter; and engineering, which allowed them to design a wall or roof to scale using balsa wood.

Former NHRA Full Throttle world champs Robert Hight in Funny Car and Tony Schumacher in Top Fuel posted the best numbers in a marathon Florida pre-season test session that for some teams spanned five days as teams geared up for the NHRA Full Throttle season-opening O’Reilly Auto Parts NHRA Winternationals presented by Super Start Batteries in Pomona, Feb 9-12.
Hight recorded a best of 4.034 seconds at 316.67 mph Saturday in his Auto Club Ford Mustang while Schumacher clocked a best of 3.76 with his U.S. Army dragster. Hight also posted a 4.071-second run at 315.49 mph.
