Two men suspected of binding employees while robbing a series of Milwaukee auto parts stores have been charged with multiple counts of false imprisonment and armed robbery with use of force. Police said more charges could follow.

Milwaukee police were able to follow Robert Earl Nash, 32, and Jason L. Wilson, 29, on Feb. 14 from a house near Washington Park on the city’s west side to an auto-parts store on W. Capitol Drive, where the men committed their last armed robbery, according to a criminal complaint released Tuesday. Both men were on probation for other crimes at the time, police said.

Police had suspected Wilson was responsible for auto parts robberies going back to September of last year and had arrested him, but didn’t have enough evidence to convict him at the time, Milwaukee police spokeswoman Anne E. Schwartz said in an email.

But police noticed similar modes of operation and description of suspects, and an anonymous tip…………… continues on Milwaukee Journal Sentinel

eBay Acquires WHI Solutions to Boost Auto Parts Catalog
News from Auctionbytes:

eBay is acquiring WHI Solutions (WHI), a provider of software and digital catalog solutions for auto parts distributors and retailers. eBay had previously entered into an agreement with WHI Solutions that allowed it access to millions of parts through Nexpart, WHI’s ecommerce solution.

WHI Solutions offers an e-catalog for electronic parts and service dealer data for over 39,000 North American vehicles. eBay said it would gain expanded selection and access to enhanced structured data “to improve parts selection and value for customers while enabling parts retailers, distributors, dealers, and manufacturers to reach more customers.”

eBay has been rolling out catalog in certain categories in an attempt to improve search results, which are hampered by its traditionally unstructured data, and in 2010, eBay Motors rolled out a Parts Compatibility feature called “Fitment.” Using the feature, sellers create one listing describing a single part that automatically adds a complete list of compatible vehicle…………… continues on Auctionbytes

For Gary “Pappy” Boward, the prospect of the tread stripping off an aging tire on his van or car is scary enough. The possibility of it happening on his motorcycle is downright terrifying.

Boward, chairman of the motorcycle rights group ABATE, came to Annapolis Tuesday to call on the General Assembly to pass a bill that would require tire dealers in Maryland to inform consumers of research showing that tires deteriorate with age and that a federal agency recommends they be replaced after six years even if the tread depth is adequate.

“If you have a catastrophic failure on the front tire of your motorcycle or even the back tire …, you’re going to have a very bad event,” Boward said after testifying before the House Economic Matters Committee.

The European Union‘s carbon emissions tax could hit luxury car markets badly by putting thousands of pounds on the retail price of gas guzzlers.

A report by the European Environment Agency (EEA) warns that Bugatti could face a charge of €40,000 (£25,000) per vehicle under the EU rules while Bentley could be hit by €20,000 in penalties.

According to the European Commission, passenger cars alone are responsible for around 12 percent of total EU emissions of carbon dioxide (CO2), the main greenhouse gas. As part of efforts to tackle climate change, the commission has set emission performance standards for new cars.

That legislation, adopted in 2009, is the cornerstone of the EU’s strategy to improve the fuel economy of cars and ensure that average emissions from new passenger cars in the EU do not exceed 120 gCO2/km.

The move was strongly criticized by luxury carmakers like IBTimes.co.uk

AAA warns drivers to watch out for potholes this spring, even with mild winter
News from WGMD Radio:

Although it’s been a mild winter, AAA Mid-Atlantic is warning drivers that potholes will still cause problem on some area roads this spring.

Potholes form when moisture seeps into cracks in the road surface, then expands when temperatures drop and contracts when temperatures rise. The freezing and thawing breaks up the pavement and combines with the weight of traffic to form a pothole.

AAA says that potholes are a threat to safety for drivers. With transportation departments not having to use much of their plowing budgets this winter, they’ll be using that money for road repairs. AAA encourages drivers to make sure their tires are properly inflated and have enough tread, and check the suspension and alignment on their vehicles. While driving, take time to look ahead for potholes in an effort to avoid them, and if that’s not possible, slow down. AAA also says beware of puddles, which can hide deep potholes.

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. — Five-time NASCAR champion Jimmie Johnson and crew chief Chad Knaus are back in the spotlight at one of racing’s biggest stages — and not for the right reason.

NASCAR officials said they confiscated part of Johnson’s Daytona 500 car Friday because of illegal modifications, a rocky start to Speedweeks for a team trying to bounce back from its worst season.

Sprint Cup Series officials determined the No. 48 Chevrolet had illegally modified C-posts, an area of sheet metal between the roof and the side windows. Knaus and the team might face penalties.

Officials cut off the C-posts and planned to ship them to NASCAR’s research-and-development center in Concord, N.C., for further testing. In the meantime, the parts in question were put on display for other teams to examine, a routine procedure for the sanctioning body.

NASCAR allowed the Hendrick Motorsports team to fix that area of the car before practice begins for the Feb. 26 Daytona 500. Qualifying is set for Sunday.

“Well, it’s a hell of a way to start the 2012 season,” s…………… continues on The Seattle Times

Q. Are you aware that new cars don’t always come with a spare? My granddaughter had a flat in a parking lot. When the Auto Club showed up to change the tire, there wasn’t a spare. The car has a kit to pump up the tire, but it had a puncture that was too significant and the car had to be towed. What if you were on a freeway at 2 in the morning? When my family bought the car, we were not informed that there isn’t a spare – and that is what I am upset about.

Car dealership security on high alert
News from WTVA:

TUPELO, Miss. (WTVA) – A Tupelo car dealership is offering a $ 2,000 reward after losing thousands in stolen rims and tires.

It isn’t the first nor second time this has happened and they’re also not alone.

Car dealerships understand many customers like to shop around after hours, but soon we could see dealerships around Tupelo installing gates to keep people out.

“They’ve all had chrome wheels. They take the tires and the whole thing and the vehicles are on the ground when we find them the next day,” said Dossett Big 4 General Manager, Rudy Dossett III.

Thursday morning Dossett found a car at his dealership raised up by a jack and all four tires gone. Its the fifth time in the past four months he’s come to work to see such a sight.

“All five of them we’re in between $ 12,000 and $ 15,000,” Dossett added.

“We’ve had problems in the past,” said Metro Ford business manager, Don Brewer.

Brewer says it had a similar problem at a different location, but security measures like cameras and closing up the dealership after hours at a new location, he…………… continues on WTVA

Feb 16 (Reuters) – U.S. auto parts retail chain Advance Auto Parts Inc posted quarterly results above analysts’ expectations, helped by higher same-store sales and new store openings.

The company said it expects full-year profit of $ 5.55-$ 5.75 per share. Analysts on average were expecting $ 5.64 a share, according to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S.

For the fourth quarter, net income was $ 66.4 million, or 90 cents a share, compared with $ 48.1 million, or 57 cents a share, a year ago.

Revenue rose about 5 percent to $ 1.33 billion, helped partly by a comparable store sales gain of 2.9 percent.

Analysts had expected earnings of 75 cents a share, before special items, on revenue of $ 1.32 billion.

Shares of the Roanoke, Virginia-based company were up 5 percent at $ 83.15 in trading before the bell. They closed at $ 79.40 on Wednesday on the New York Stock Exchange.
