Finding Auto Parts: Buying Carburetors and Related Parts
A Primer
A carburetor is a part on an internal combustion engine that blends the air and fuel. They are normally found on small engines, older automobiles, and specialty vehicles including stock cars. Two Hungarian scientists invented the carburetor in 1893, and was the only device used for this purpose until the late 1950’s. Most engines have only one carburetor but some engines have several. There are many developments in regard to these types of auto parts in recent times.
How a Carburetor Functions
A carburetor operates in an internal combustion engine operates by the engine igniting the fuel to create a high amount of energy which becomes an expanding gas and then transfers that energy to the engine for its operation. Because the engines operation depends on the igniting of the fuel, it is important that the correct combination of fuel and air is created for the combustion.
The carburetor does several things simultaneously. It filter the air that is taken into the carburetor, it measures the necessary ratio of air to fuel based on the engines need, and it sends the proper amount of fuel to the air stream that feeds the engine. In the carburetor a vacuum creates an area of lower pressure than the atmospheric pressure. This vacuum uses that pressure differential to meter the fuel into the engine. It meters the temperature of the air and the engine, the changes of acceleration, and the difference between operating with a partly open throttle and a fully open throttle.
Because the carburetor has so many complicated functions, the automobile carburetor has for the most part been replaced with electronic fuel injection. In the early 1980’s, electronic components started being added to carburetors, which eventually led to the replacement of the carburetor with fuel injection systems.
Finding Carburetors
Even though carburetors are much simpler to work on than the new complicated fuel injection systems, they were replaced because of the improved performance of the fuel injection system.
Since older cars still use carburetors, there is still a regular market for new and used carburetors for these vehicles. To find the best buy on new or rebuilt carburetors, go to www.webercarburetors.com, www.bizrate.com, or www.guaranteedcarburetors.com. .
