Car Parts: Clutch, CV & Drive Shaft Parts
Introduction
If you are in the market for car parts, you are best served by having a basic understanding about different types of car parts before you begin your search. Through this article, you are presented with some basic information about car parts, particularly clutch, CV and drive shaft parts. Armed with this useful information you will be in a better position to make solid decisions when it comes to purchasing these types of car parts.
The Clutch
A clutch is necessary in a car because the engine spins all the time but the car wheels don’t. When you stop your car, you do not want to kill the engine, so the wheels need to be disconnected from the engine somehow. It is the clutch, which allows this to occur in a smooth fashion.
A clutch operates by the friction between a clutch plate and a flywheel. The flywheel connects to the engine and a clutch plate connects to the transmission.
When a person’s foot is off the pedal, springs push the pressure plate against the clutch disc and it in turn presses against the flywheel. This action locks the engine to the transmission shaft that causes them to spin at the same speed.
The amount of force that the clutch can hold will depend on the friction between the clutch plate and the flywheel.
A cable pushes on the release fork when the clutch pedal is pressed and presses the throw-out bearing against the middle of the diaphragm spring. When this happens it causes the spring to pull the pressure plate away from the clutch disc therefore releasing the clutch from the spinning engine.
Common Problems
The most common failure of a clutch is the friction material on the disc’s wear out. This is very similar to the wearing out of brake shoes. This causes the clutch to slip.
A drive shaft is the propeller shaft in a car that transmits the engine torque to the differential or from the differential to the drive wheels. The drive shaft delivers power from the transmission of the car to the wheels.
The CV Joint
A CV joint is a constant velocity joint. These are attached to each end of a drive shaft and are needed to transfer the torque at a constant speed to steered wheels and also accommodates the up and down motions of the suspension
