Understanding Your Engine

A car’s engine has many moving parts and when there is movement there is friction and when there is friction, there is heat. Both motor oil and water in the engine allows the car to not become overheated because without them the engine would become boiling hot and burn up.
An engine block must be kept fairly cool to avoid overheating.  This is where the radiator system comes into play in a car. To allow the pistons to slide freely in their cylinders and not cause excessive friction, a mixture of water and anti-freeze needs to be pumped through the chambers in the engine block.


 

Keeping Your Car in Top Condition

When this water and anti-freeze mixture leaves the engine block it is superheated.  It then travels to the radiator through a rubber hose and the car’s radiator cools the liquid.
A car’s radiator is designed to maximize surface area through a large number of internal folds and chambers.  As the hot mixture of water and coolant moves through this intricate system of folds and chambers, the heat is drawn out through the walls of the radiator.  A fan also forces cooler outside air through the radiator to accelerate this cooling process and when the car is in motion the front of the radiator is also cooled by incoming air into the car’s grill and into the radiator.

Understanding How Your Water Pump Functions

A water pump is a simple centrifugal pump that is driven by a belt that is connected to the crankshaft of the engine.  The pump is responsible for circulating fluid whenever the engine is running.

The water pump spins, sending water and coolant to the outside using centrifugal force.  This causes the water mixture to be drawn from the center continuously.  The input to the pump is located near the center so that the water mixture hits the vanes of the pump and is then flung outwards to the outside of the pump where it can enter the engine.
