An Overview of Emissions Auto Parts

Introduction

When it comes to auto parts in the 21st century, oftentimes in the search for auto parts a person finds his or her self lookin for parts for an auto's emissions system.  Through this article, you are provider with a primer about basic emissions auto parts and how you can go about purchasing these types of auto parts.

Emissions Generally

“Emissions” refers to the amount of pollution and chemicals that your car spews into the atmosphere every time you start and run it somewhere. This depends on the shape the various components are in, as well as other factors like fluid levels, filter conditions, and sensors. Emissions standards have been an important influence in mitigating the heavy levels of pollution and atmospheric damage that we have done to our earth simply by driving, although there are many other contributors as well (such as factories and some natural processes).

The Basic Parts and How to Buy Them

Emission Control Unit. This is a unit found in the exhaust system of your car, and works by forcing pollutants that enter the tubes along the system into another sleeve. This sleeve, which is at a 90-degree angle to the direction of the exhaust, contains chemicals that neutralize the environmental contaminants in the exhaust and removes much of their danger to the air.

Air Pollution Pump. Also called a smog pump, this device was designed to help cars burn fuel more efficiently by forcing air into the exhaust system. This, in turn, helps the converter burn unburned fuel and other pollutants, rendering them less harmful to the environment.

Oxygen Sensor. This device, also called the O-2 sensor, is a feedback device that senses the amount of oxygen in exhaust gases. This detection signals the computer to change the air-to-fuel ratio for cleaner exhaust and less pollution.

You can find most of these parts at an auto parts store, or online on eBay. Although new is best when it comes to pollution equipment, many people turn to rebuilt parts, especially for the smog pump, because of the high cost. These devices can also be difficult to install without special equipment, and most people opt to have the work done by a trained mechanic even if they live in a place where self-repairs on emissions equipment is permitted.

Even if you decide to so your repairs yourself, make sure you have a good manual to work from. One thing you don’t want to have happen is to spend a lot of money on parts, a lot of time on installing them, then have your car fail emissions for a second time. In the end it may be best for you to have an ASE certified mechanic who specializes in emissions systems fix your problem. Remember that we don’t have a right to clean air—we have a responsibility to produce it.

And, of course, when all is said and done you will want to make certain that you are dealing with a reputable supplier or dealer of auto parts.
