This simple mechanism is actually a reverse tuner of sorts, which causes the various properties of sound to cancel each other out. The muffler does this with a series of holes punctured into a tube that connects to a resonator. The resonator causes the sound waves to cancel each other by making the waves reflect on themselves. As the sounds waves reflect, the air pressure in one direction cancels the air pressure coming the other way. Other mufflers, like cherry bombs and glass packs, work mostly by absorbing sound.

Tail Pipe (Exhaust Pipe). This is the tube that connects the exhaust system to the outside world. It’s the visible part of the pipe that runs from the muffler to the back of the car. There are specially designed tailpipes that actually help improve a car’s performance by improving exhaust flow. Many people who race or just want to improve a street car’s performance will turn to a specially designed exhaust pipe system. However, more than this, they carry whatever poisonous gasses that remain away from the interior of the car.

The exhaust system is one of the most important systems in your car. If it malfunctions you can become poisoned with carbon monoxide fumes and other exhaust gasses.
