Auto Parts in Perspective: A Look at Relays
A Look at Relays
Relays are truly simple mechanisms, and consist only of an electromagnet, spring, armature, and electrical contacts; these are used to create two circuits, one which acts as a switch, and the other that makes the contacts to distribute current to another source. When the first circuit is loaded with current, or turned on, it attracts an armature, which then makes contact with the electrical source as well and completes the circuit to the electrical device. When the current to the first circuit is broken, the armature returns to its original position and the device is then switched off.
Your Auto, Auto Parts and the Functions of Relays
Your car is full of relay switches. Many reside in your dashboard, and make it possible for you to use small electromagnets (first circuit) to move an armature to make contact with a much larger source of power. In modern cars, these relays are usually located in the fuse box, making replacement and maintenance much easier for the auto technician or owner.
Sometimes where a large power load is needed, relays must be set up in a series and “cascaded,” so that a small relay powers a little larger relay. That relay powers another larger relay which might power the final connection. Relays are also used for overcurrent situations, and when they are activated they activate a trip in a circuit breaker and cause current interruptions.
A Final Look at Car Parts and Relays
Some relays in your car are very small, and although you could replace them yourself, they can be difficult to handle. Relays can be purchased at auto parts store or ordered online. Make sure you also have the correct tools to replace them if you are doing so yourself, and that you have the right relay. Remember that one part of your relay will require a certain electrical load and the other will have a limit, so use the manufacturer’s guidelines or have a specialist replace it for you.
