Vettel targeting first Formula One win of the season after taking Bahrain pole
    News from AutoWeek:

By: Adam Cooper on April 21, 2012

LAT PHOTOGRAPHIC – Vettel won the pole at Bahrain Saturday, and is primed to win his first race of the 2012 season.

Sebastian Vettel is on target for his first win of 2012 after taking his first pole of the Formula One season in Bahrain.

Vettel has however used two sets of prime tires when other leading contenders have used one, and that may be something of a compromise at race time, when every lap on fresh rubber will count.

“I felt much happier with the car all weekend, I went out and I think we’ve always had the ability to go reasonably quick. Surely it depends a little bit when and where you are, which tires etc., but I had a good feeling all throughout the weekend, and I’m very happy.

    News from Reuters:

    WASHINGTON | Sat Apr 21, 2012 6:30pm EDT

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – Russian consumers, in the days of the Soviet Union, could spend years on a waiting list to buy a car. Now, Russia is poised to become the biggest auto market in Europe and President Barack Obama wants U.S. parts manufacturers in on the action.

A top U.S. Commerce Department official, beginning on Monday, will lead 13 auto parts and service companies on a trade mission to Moscow, Samara and St. Petersburg in search of new sales. Fender and gasket manufacturers are jointing companies that offer emission reduction and heating induction systems.

Shortage of resin used in auto parts prompts carmakers to rethink “just in …
    News from Washington Post:

DETROIT — Who knew that an obscure chemical called PA-12 would be so important to the auto business?

It’s a key ingredient in nylon used to make plastic auto parts, pipelines and other items. The resin is made by only a handful of companies, and an explosion at a German plant last month took a major global supplier off line.

Now that it’s in short supply, companies that make everything from cars to sporting goods are trying to figure out what to do. The shortage could cause auto plants to shut down within weeks and crimp the flow of vehicles to your local dealer.

Here’s more about the resin and why it’s so important.

    Q: What is this stuff?

A: In the chemical business it’s called a polyamide resin, a form of nylon that can be molded into plastic pipes, tubes and hoses to carry vapors, fuel and other liquids. A single molecule has 12 atoms of carbon and one atom of nitrogen. The rest is hydrogen. It melts at 302 degrees Fahrenheit and then can be molded into many shapes, says Sadhan Jana, a professor of polymer engineering at the…………… continues on Washington Post

Mark Phelan: The last engine you’d expect could change auto industry
    News from Modesto Bee:

There’s a new class of super-engine on the road, and it’s not what you expect.

The most exciting, technically intriguing engines I’ve tested in the past six months weren’t throbbing V-8s, exotic V-12s, trendy electric-gasoline hybrids or post-modernist hip European diesels.

My heart – and my eager right foot – belongs to the 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine. Engines that size were long dismissed as weaklings fit only for little economy cars. Americans weren’t inclined to take an engine seriously if the total displacement of its cylinders was the same size as a 99-cent bottle of Coke.

That was then. Today, 2.0-liter engines propel high-powered sport sedans, elegant roadsters and roomy crossover SUVs.

“This is a huge transformation in the industry,” said Tom Murphy, executive editor of Wards AutoWorld magazine, which publishes the influential 10 Best Engines list.

After building mediocre four-cylinder engines for years, General Motors and Ford are at the forefront of the trend, offering…………… continues on Modesto Bee

Auto review: Hyundai Azera steps into large-sedan ring
    News from Belleville News Democrat:

In a quiet, forgotten corner of the automotive landscape, there is a segment of vehicle called the large sedan. These cars tilt toward luxury but have a foot firmly planted in practicality and economics.

They are for cheap hedonists. Or penny-pinching gourmands. They are for people who fly coach but upgrade to the exit row, favor Macaroni Grill over Olive Garden, or see movies only when they hit video on demand but then spring for the HD version.

After several years of neglect, Hyundai is now paying this segment some attention with its 2012 Azera. Slotting above the company’s everyman Sonata but below the European-hunting Genesis sedan, the relaunch of the $ 32,000 Azera foretells of a battle in the large sedan segment.

Both Chevrolet and Toyota brands used the recent New York auto show to introduce heavily redesigned and rethought versions of their large sedans, the Impala and Avalon, respectively. Those models arrive in 2013 and look to shake up current competitors such as Buick’s stout LaCrosse,…………… continues on Belleville News Democrat

Global Auto Parts Shortage Threatens Assembly Lines
    News from CNBC.com:

Here we go again. One year after the auto industry was hit by parts and components shortages following an earthquake and tsunami in Japan, automakers are scrambling to avoid a repeat of what happened last year.

This time, the problem is caused by a shortage of resin used in the production of fuel lines, brake lines and other engine components. In Detroit Tuesday afternoon, well over 100 executives from the auto industry met to discuss the impending shortage. In the words of one auto-industry veteran, the situation is “not good.”

The resin shortage is a result of an explosion in late March at Evonik Industries, a German-headquartered firm that produces CDT. CDT is a key ingredient used in the manufacturing of PA-12, a substance us…………… continues on CNBC.com

Clerk at Denver auto-parts store slain in robbery attempt
    News from Denver Post:

Police are searching for a pair of suspects after a robbery turned deadly Monday night at a Denver auto-parts store.

Denver police spokesman Sonny Jackson said the first call came in around 9:15 p.m. about a robbery in progress at O’Reilly Auto Parts, 5125 Chambers Road. Police were en route to the store when they got a second report of shots fired, Jackson said.

Two masked men entered the store and tried to rob it. Jackson said the victim, a clerk at the store, was trying to flee and was shot outside.

The victim was rushed to University of Colorado Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. He was identified Tuesday by the Denver coroner’s office as 22-year-old Pablo Del Rio Jr. The cause of death was a gunshot wound to the back.

“He was just such a great guy. He was smart; I was proud of him,” said Rodolfo Del Rio, the victim’s cousin.

Family members gathered around Pablo Del Rio’s car, which was still in the store parking lot Tuesday morning. Rodolfo Del Rio said his cousin grew up in Montbello, had a daughter and mo…………… continues on Denver Post

While the biggest story in NASCAR this weekend was the roar of engines at Rockingham Speedway – after an eight year absence – in the form of NASCAR Camping World Truck Series, the NASCAR Sprint Cup and Nationwide Series were at Texas Motor Speedway after their first break of the season.

They say the stars at night are big and bright in Texas. But if it weren’t for a lighting snafu under the those big stars, Danica Patrick wouldn’t have had the kind of finish she had.

In what has come to be known as a “Daytona-like caution,” the lights on the track went dark. Without proper lighting, the drivers couldn’t race properly. On lap 163, Patrick was a lap down when the lights went out and the caution flag came out. She happened to be in the Aaron’s Lucky Dog position and got her lap back. This led to a chain of strategic pit calls, allowing her to get fresh tires during the next caution, which made it easy for her to pass others in the field, ultimate…………… continues on CBS Local

AutoZone: Does Insider’s Flight Signify End To Auto Parts Retailers?
    News from Seeking Alpha:

On Thursday, April 12, popular hedge fund blog MarketFolly.com reported that Eddie Lampert, the chairman of Sears Holdings (SHLD) and hedge fund manager of ESL Investments, had liquidated a large portion of his holdings in AutoZone (AZO) over the open market. He additionally sold numerous covered calls. In this rather atypical bearish positioning by the former director of AutoZone (from July 1999 to October 2006), the move comes after AutoZone’s stock has increased over 130% in a steady incline since the start of 2010. As of April 15, 2012, the company traded at $ 380.97/share with a market capitalization of $ 14.85 billion.

Sensor architecture allows real-time auto emissions monitoring, Pt. 1
    News from EE Times:

As opposed to current periodic emission-control system testing—sensors, MCUs, and memory come together in an updated approach to real-time exhaust monitoring for improved pollution control.

“Green” is the buzzword these days. Globally, various organizations are striving to make their processes as eco-friendly as possible, with the automotive industry one of the leaders in this endeavor.

Vehicle-emissions are being strictly monitored and emission-norms being revised regularly to ensure a “greener” and pollution-free environment. However, present vehicle pollution-checking is still dependent on old mechanisms of manual-regular-checking of the auto-exhaust. The exhausts are sensed and analyzed by a machine and a pollution certificate is issued.

This article highlights inherent limitations of this traditional approach and proposes a real-time exhaust monitoring solution to enforce better pollution control for a greener future.”

How Green Are Electric Cars? Depends on Where You Plug In
    News from Pittsburgh Post Gazette:

    April 14, 2012 1:00 pm

    Share with others:

By PAUL STENQUIST / The New York Times

IT’S a lot like one of those math problems that gave you fits in sixth grade: a salesman leaves home in Denver and drives his electric car to a meeting in Boulder. At the same time, a physicist driving the same model electric car sets out from her loft in Los Angeles, heading to an appointment near Anaheim.

For both, the traffic is light, and the cars consume an identical amount of battery power while traveling the same number of miles. Being purely electric, they emit zero tailpipe pollutants during their trips.

The test question: are their carbon footprints also equal?

The answer may be a surprise. According to a report that the Union of Concerned Scientis…………… continues on Pittsburgh Post Gazette

    News from Bloomberg:

Cytec Industries Inc. (CYT), the second- biggest producer of carbon-fiber composites for airplanes, said greenhouse-gas limits and rising fuel-efficiency standards will drive “outlandish” sales growth to automakers seeking lighter materials.

Sales to vehicle makers in 5 to 10 years may surpass aerospace, which currently accounts for 90 percent of advanced composite sales, Chief Executive Officer Shane Fleming said today in a telephone interview. Cytec, based in Woodland Park, New Jersey, gains “critical mass” in the auto market with its purchase of U.K. competitor Umeco Plc announced today, he said.
