The 2008 Ford Taurus gets a top ranking for reliability, yet suffers from poor resale value — which makes it a great buy.

It’s never been more difficult for buyers to find a bargain in the used car market. Fortunately we’ve dug deep into the data to identify 11 worthy late-model cars and SUVs that are truly great deals.
According to the used-car valuation experts at Kelley Blue Book, the average value of a one- to three-year-old used vehicle has increased from $ 15,000 in 2008 to more than $ 23,000 in 2011, which amounts to an average boost of nearly 16 percent per year. This is causing an affordability problem among cash-strapped buyers who can’t otherwise afford a new car, which on average costs nearly $ 30,000 according to the industry research and f …MSNBC

The 1969 Camaro has been voted best Chevy of all time.

As part of their 100 year celebration Chevrolet set up a weird bracket style voting system in an attempt to pick the best car the company ever produced. After 124,368 votes were cast the 1969 Camaro came out victorious. Second place went to the 1970 Chevrolet Chevelle SS.
I like ’69 Camaros and ’70 Chevelles just as much as the next guy, in many cases more than the next guy, but are these two cars really the best cars Chevrolet ever made? They’re popular and they are certainly cool, but I’m not sold on these choices. The 1963 Corvette Stingray that was voted fourth would probably be my number one. The new ZR1 is excellent and anything fro …MSNBC

The editors at Kelley Blue Book have put together a list of their favorite affordable cars for high school and college students.
They picked five new models and, since not every student — or even every student’s parents — can afford a new car, they chose five used cars, too.
KBB’s top pick among new cars is the Hyundai Accent, which seems to be just about everyone’s favorite subcompact these days.
The Accent “appeals to a finely tuned sense of value,” KBB says.

DETROIT — One of the top picks for the back-to-school crowd, the Ford Fiesta, the company’s first subcompact in decades, offers a nice range of features and a sporty design.
If you’re past the stage when the kids want pencils, paper and a Transformers notebook to help them head back to school, odds are it’s time to find them a new set of wheels.
True, you probably had to walk to school — uphill both ways. …MSNBC

One of our expert’s top picks: The BMW X5 35D
NEW YORK (Money Magazine) — The supply of new wheels is tighter, as the Japanese auto industry recovers from the effects of the recent earthquakes, and as domestic automakers have wised up and stopped overproducing.
Result: Rebates and other incentives — once rampant — are down almost 20% and steep discounts off sticker price are less likely too.
But you can still score a deal. Here are five strategies for landing your own, plus four picks for the best car deals now.
Figure out what your current ride is worth. First, plug the stats about your vehicle (be honest about its condition) into the calculator at Kelley Blue Book’s website (kbb.com).
It’ll spit out the “private party” value, or what you could expect to get if you sold the car yourself. That way, at trade-in time, you’ll know if the dealer’s offer is close enough to be worth it.
Research features and prices online. Before you walk into a dealership, you should already have a darn good idea which models you’re interested in and why. Compare sticker prices (and real-world prices), features, specs, and fuel economy on virtually every model out there on kbb.com, edmunds.com, or AOL Autos.
Once you’ve narrowed the field to three cars, hit a local dealership and take them for a spin — then pick a winner. …CNN

Given its reputation for quality and dependability, the Toyota Corolla has long been a darling of compact-car buyers in the U.S.
In fact, Toyota customer loyalty has become so blinkered lately that those buyers are willfully ignoring poor reviews and even a shattering series of recalls and are continuing to buy Corollas based on their experience with Toyota vehicles that were built in the past.

The Toyota Prius was Consumer Reports’ Top Pick in this category, but the Fusion Hybrid actually outscored it in the magazine’s testing.
So why did the Prius win? Because it’s got the lock on fuel economy — a critical factor in this category.
“The Fusion Hybrid is a better vehicle, overall, but not as ‘Green,’” said Consumer Reports’ Jake Fisher.
For those with their hearts set on a Detroit product, there are many domestic products that are more than worth considering, according to Consumer Reports.
Here are the vehicles Consumer Reports calls “America’s Best.”

p class=”i1″>When shopping for a new vehicle, a buyer’s attention usually goes to price, monthly payments, styling and the amount of rebate.
But one of the often overlooked factors is resale value. How much the vehicle is projected to be worth after three, four or five years is key if you are the kind of driver likely to sell or trade the vehicle in after a few years.
Kelley Blue Book tracks resale value, and recently issued a list of the best brands and individual models for resale value.

Best brand: Subaru
The Japanese brand is best known for having all-wheel-drive standard on all of its vehicles. The Subaru Outback is ubiquitous in Minnesota, Maine, New Hampshire and Oregon — states that experience regular snow, lots of spring mud and rain. But Subaru also limits its sales rebates and other incentives, which means that owners are able to sell their vehicles for the biggest percentage of the original purchase price of any brand. Of course, Subaru is also known for their owners hanging on to their vehicles well beyond 100,000 miles.
