FORTUNE — It sounds like a next-generation iPhone — voice recognition, multitouch, a slick interface. But it’s not. Instead, this is General Motor’s upcoming in-vehicle communication system, dubbed CUE for “Cadillac User Experience,” due next spring in the company’s flagship car, the Cadillac XTS. And it’s the American luxury manufacturer’s latest bid to make its mark in the hard-fought and lucrative full-size, high-end sedan market.
For years, auto companies have promised the technologies that have become commonplace in people’s smartphones would make their way into car dashboards. Until recently, the results have been mixed. Now, high-tech features are increasingly influencing shoppers to choose one model over another. And GM (GM) wants in.
The company is betting that it can make technology a key differentiator for the XTS, which is likely to compete with some of the most expensive vehicles from the likes of BMW, Toyota’s (TM) Lexus and Mercedes-Benz. “Cadillac wants to bring young buyers to its brand, buyers who already own iPads and know how to use high-tech gadgets,” notes Brandy Schaffels, senior editor for TrueCar, an automotive consumer website. “But Cadillac also doesn’t want to al …CNN

Cadillac’s ‘Ciel’ concept car, shown in prototype form at a show in Carmel, Calif., last week, hints at the brand’s design future. The sky’s the limit with the new Cadillac Ciel concept car — or so it might seem with the striking convertible that hints at the future flagship model under development at the General Motors luxury brand.
It’s been a tough few years for Cadillac, but the once-dominant car brand is intent on regaining the momentum it seemed to have a decade ago. That’s when it first introduced the edgy, “Art & Science” design theme meant to differentiate the brand from other luxury nameplates that often have had a tendency to look a bit too much alike.

Four different versions of the Cadillac Escalade topped the Highway Loss Data Institute’s rankings for theft claim frequency. Highest of all was the EXT, which has a pickup bed in the back.
NEW YORK (CNNMoney) — Criminals seem to have a thing for big vehicles. The Cadillac Escalade remains the car most likely to be stolen, according to new data from the Highway Loss Data Institute.
This is the fourth year in a row the Escalade has topped this list. The rankings for most stolen cars are based on auto insurance claims data from 2008 and 2009.
Of the top 10 vehicles with the highest theft frequency, according to the HLDI, eight are large General Motors (GM, Fortune 500) or Ford (F, Fortune 500) trucks or SUVs. The other two are versions of the Chrysler 300 sedan.
Of four versions of the Escalade — all of which were frequent theft targets — the Escalade EXT, which has a pickup bed, was the most frequent target.

GM will build a production version of its Cadillac Converj Concept to be called the Cadillac ELR.
NEW YORK (CNNMoney) — GM said Wednesday that it will go forward with plans to build a production model of an electric Cadillac luxury coupe.
The Converj Concept, which was first presented at the 2009 Detroit Auto Show, will be called the Cadillac ELR.
The Cadillac ELR will be GM’s luxury version of the Volt.
“The concept generated instant enthusiasm,” Vice President-Cadillac Marketing Don Butler said. “Like other milestone Cadillac models of the past, the ELR will offer something not otherwise present — the combination of electric propulsion with striking design and the fun of luxury coupe driving.”
The vehicle, which is currently in development, will be powered by a lithium-ion battery, an electric drive unit, and a four-cylinder engine-generator similar to the Chevy Volt. The Cadillac ELR will run primarily on electricity — saving consumers the cost of gasoline and reducing emissions.
Specific details about performance and price have yet to be announced.
