The gasoline version of the Chevrolet Spark minicar, shown here, will go on sale in the U.S. next year. An all-electric plug-in version will go on sale in select markets in 2013.
NEW YORK (CNNMoney) — General Motors, maker of the Chevy Volt plug-in hybrid, will sell a small totally electric car beginning in 2013, the automaker announced Wednesday.
The Chevy Spark EV will be sold in limited markets in the U.S. and other countries, GM said.
Smaller than a typical subcompact, the Spark is a so-called minicar. It’s a couple of inches shorter than a Mini Cooper.
A gasoline-powered version of the Spark is expected to go on sale here early next year.
In the past, GM (GM, Fortune 500) executives have expressed doubts about the market for purely electric cars because of their limited driving range. The automaker attempted to market a two-seat all-electric car, the EV1, in some states in the 1990s. GM stopped making the car when laws requiring the sale of electric cars ended in 2003.
GM began selling the Chevrolet Volt, a plug-in car that can drive about 35 mile …CNN

The 2011 Chevrolet Spark.
By Roland Jones
General Motors plans to introduce an electric version of the Chevrolet Spark in the U.S.
The electric minicar will go on sale in limited quantities in select U.S. and global markets starting in 2013, including California, the automaker said. GM made the announcement during a media event celebrating the 100th anniversary of the Chevy brand.
“The Spark EV offers customers living in urban areas who have predictable driving patterns or short commutes an all-electric option,” Jim Federico, global vehicle chief engineer for electric vehicles at Chevrolet, said in a statement. “It complements Chevrolet’s growing range of electrified vehicles, including the Volt extended-range EV and the 2013 Malibu Eco with eAssist technology.”
The Spark announcement follows news in August that GM will build a Cadillac ELR luxury electric car as the automaker, which also produces the plug-in electric hybrid Chevy Volt, looks to burnish its green credentials.< …MSNBC

The 1969 Camaro has been voted best Chevy of all time.As part of their 100 year celebration Chevrolet set up a weird bracket style voting system in an attempt to pick the best car the company ever produced. After 124,368 votes were cast the 1969 Camaro came out victorious. Second place went to the 1970 Chevrolet Chevelle SS.
I like ’69 Camaros and ’70 Chevelles just as much as the next guy, in many cases more than the next guy, but are these two cars really the best cars Chevrolet ever made? They’re popular and they are certainly cool, but I’m not sold on these choices. The 1963 Corvette Stingray that was voted fourth would probably be my number one. The new ZR1 is excellent and anything fro …MSNBC

A new study suggests that potential buyers are rapidly losing interest in the Chevy Volt — GM’s much-vaunted plug-in hybrid vehicle.DETROIT — Is the Chevrolet Volt running out of juice?
Even as the maker begins its long-promised production ramp-up, a new study suggests that potential buyers are rapidly losing interest in the plug-in hybrid vehicle.
Introduced last December, Volt is one of the first new vehicles to test the potential market for electric propulsion. It has been going head-to-head with Nissan’s pure battery-electric Leaf. Sal …MSNBC

DETROIT — General Motors Co is recalling 16,198 Chevrolet Impala and Buick LaCrosse cars in the United States and Canada to address sensor and power steering problems, the automaker said Friday.
The company said it knew of no injuries or crashes related to the two recalls.
GM is recalling 11,905 2012 Impalas to inspect for proper installation of the power steering hose. The company said the hose, if misrouted, could be damaged and spray fluid onto hot engine parts to create a potential for a fire.
The Detroit-based company said the defect was discovered during production at the Oshawa, Ontario, plant, where the car is built.
GM said dealers will replace the hose and add abrasion protection if the hose is not properly routed.
Of the total Impalas affected by the recall, 10,334 are in the United States and the rest in Canada.
GM also said it is recalling 4,293 2012 LaCrosses to reprogram the electronic brake control module because an incorrect calibration may cause the electronic stability system to improperl …MSNBC

The Chevrolt Volt will soon be on parking ticket duty in the Big Apple.
NEW YORK (CNNMoney) — The New York City Police Department has a new cruiser that will be silently plying the city streets very soon.
Among 70 new electrically-driven vehicles purchased by the City of New York will be 50 Chevrolet Volts that will be used for, among other things, police work.
The Volts won’t be chasing down bank robbers — at least not yet. They’ll be used by traffic enforcement agents who cruise the city’s streets writing parking tickets.
The Volt will be the first electric car used by the New York City Police Department, although the department already uses a number of hybrid cars and electric scooters.
General Motors (GM, Fortune 500), which makes the Chevrolet Volt, calls it an “extended-range electric vehicle.” It can travel up to 35 miles on a fully charged battery, according to EPA estimates. After that, a gasoline engine generates power for continued driving.
The city also purchased 10 …CNN

NEW YORK (CNNMoney) — Ford will soon produce a competitor to General Motors’ Chevrolet Volt.

GM to offer Pandora radio in Chevy cars
Posted on February 22nd, 2011 by admin
DETROIT — General Motors Co will launch a new system to stream online radio from Pandora in upcoming Chevrolets starting with the Volt and Equinox.
The new partnership comes as the top U.S. automaker looks to make up for lost ground against Ford Motor Co in the increasingly competitive market for digital entertainment systems in vehicles.
GM said the 2012 Chevrolet Volt and the Equinox would come equipped with a new system dubbed “Chevy MyLink” anchored by a seven-inch, color touch-screen display in the dashboard.
The system will allow Chevy drivers to stream music from Pandora Media Inc by syncing the vehicle to a smartphone and using an existing Pandora account.
Chief Executive Dan Akerson, who has a background in telecommunications, has said one of his priorities was to sharpen the automaker’s focus on vehicle electronics. Thursday’s announcement marked the first new such service GM has launched since Akerson’s arrival as CEO in September.
GM was the first automaker to launch an on-board navigation and safety system when it debuted OnStar in 1996, a satellite system that it developed on its own.
But by striking a partnership with Microsoft Corp, Ford managed to generate momentum for its turnaround over the last two years with Sync, an entertainment system that helped drive sales for younger consumers.
The most recent version of the Ford system, known as MyFord Touch, went on sale in ……… Read more from MSNBC
