Ford Focus Battery Electric Vehicle review
News from Telegraph.co.uk:It goes on sale in the US first and arrives in the UK this autumn. No prices yet, but expect to be paying at least £25,000 including the Government’s £5,000 subsidy. The driveline has been developed by Magna International and it includes a 23kWh, liquid-cooled, LG Chem-supplied lithium-ion battery pack, which gives a range of about 100 miles. The battery systems, inverter and cooling adds about 440lb to the all-up weight of a petrol-engined Focus and Mark Lucas, a Ford engineer working on the project, says that the cost of the battery installation is about a third that of the entire car.
It takes a few seconds for the systems check and the all clear light to illuminate on the dash. Then just pull the transmission lever through to Drive and the car creeps away without any throttle like a conventional automatic. Like most electric cars, the initial acceleration is startling as the electric motor delivers its maximum 245lb ft of torque virtually from a standstill. It falters away above 50mph, however, as the torque slopes off, although the 90mph top speed is…………… continues on Telegraph.co.uk

Ford’s electric car battery pack costs $ 12000-$ 15000
News from Fox News:One of the auto industry’s most closely guarded secrets, the enormous cost of batteries for electric cars, has spilled out.
Speaking at a forum on green technology, Ford Motor Co. CEO Alan Mulally indicated battery packs for the company’s Focus electric car costs between $ 12,000 and $ 15,000 apiece.
“When you move into an all-electric vehicle, the battery size moves up to around 23 kilowatt hours, [and] it weighs around 600 to 700 pounds,” Mulally said at Fortune magazine’s Brainstorm Green conference in California.
“They’re around $ 12,000 to $ 15,000 [a battery]” for a type of car that normally sells for about $ 22,000, he continued, referring to the price of a gasoline-powered Focus. “So, you can see why the economics are what they are.”
Ford is currently promoting its $ 39,200 Focus EV at events around the country. It has a 23 kilowatt-hour battery pack. A Ford spokeswoman said Mulally’s comments were designed to provide an indication of the car’s battery costs.
Based on the price range that Mulally indicated, Dearborn, Mich.-based Ford appe…………… continues on Fox News

When using an electric car, it’s all about location
News from Houston Chronicle:Electric cars are only as green as the power plants that fuel them.
As a result, they are far greener in some parts of the country than in others, according to a report issued Monday by the Union of Concerned Scientists.
In California – which derives most of its electricity from natural gas plants, nuclear reactors, renewable power sources and hydroelectric dams – an electric car produces the same amount of global warming emissions as a gasoline-burning car that gets 79 miles to the gallon.
In Texas, which is more dependent on coal, an electric car has the same greenhouse gas footprint as a gasoline-powered car getting 46 miles per gallon – about the same as a Toyota Prius hybrid.
And in several coal-centric states, an e…………… continues on Houston Chronicle
UK new car emissions drop 4.2 per cent in 2011
News from Business Green:Average carbon emissions from new cars sold in 2011 fell by 4.2 per cent compared to 2010, dropping below 140g/km for the first time, according to new figures from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT).
The trade bodies latest New Car CO2 Report, to be released later today, will also reveal that almost half the market (46.8 per cent) had CO2 emissions below the 2015 European legislative target of 130g/km CO2.
Meanwhile, green and fuel efficient cars, such as hybrid and diesel vehicles, enjoyed record sales.
Diesel vehicles accounted for 50.6 per cent of the new car market, while alternatively-fuelled vehicles (AFVs) grew to 1.3 per cent of the 2011 market. The vast majority of AFVs were petrol-electric hybrids, which had an average CO2 output of 104g/km – 25 per cent lower than the UK average.
Sales of zero-emission electric vehicles also rose by 557 per cent to 1,…………… continues on Business Green

LaCrosse mates 4-cylinder with electric motor
News from The Associated Press:LaCrosse mates 4-cylinder with electric motor
Finally, there’s a Buick LaCrosse sedan that puts many of today’s most topical fuel economy features into its base model, at no extra charge.
The new, 2012 Buick LaCrosse lineup has a base model with four-cylinder engine mated to an electric motor, with regenerative braking, wind-smoothing, aerodynamic touches and automatic engine stop at traffic lights, to deliver improved gasoline mileage. It’s called the LaCrosse with eAssist.
A LaCrosse with only four cylinders isn’t offered anymore, because who would want it?
The 2012 LaCrosse with eAssist delivers 6 more miles per gallon in both city and highway driving than a solitary four cylinder did in the 2011 LaCrosse, according to federal government estimates.
Specifically, the 2012 LaCrosse with eAssist is rated by the federal government at 25 miles per gallon in the city and 36 mpg on the highway.
This compares wi…………… continues on The Associated Press

Electric DeLorean Races Toward 2013 Release [PICS]
News from Mashable:The not-yet-released electric version of the iconic DeLorean sports car featured in the Back to the Future films has arrived at the 2012 New York International Auto Show, touting an iPhone dock, Bluetooth capabilities and a battery-powered engine.
The electric DeLorean, which will hit the U.S. market in 2013, was originally announced in October 2011 but it’s making a surprise appearance at the auto show this week.
The latest DeLorean still comes with recognizable gull-wing doors, a stainless steel body and a rear-mounted engine. However this sucker is electrical: It features a 32-kilowatt-hour lithium-ion phosphate battery system. It’s still sporty, too: The car can go from 0 mph to 60 mph in less than six seconds.
Although DeLoreans typically run for $ 65,000, the electric model will cost $ 95,000.
“The electric DeLorean is a natural progression for the vehicle — it has everything that people expect in cars today that you couldn’t get back in 1981 with the original model,” James Espey, vi…………… continues on Mashable

McMaster gets $ 3.5m jolt for electric car battery research
News from Hamilton Spectator:McMaster researchers are powered up for the next four years with $ 3.5 million in grants and in-kind donations to investigate the reliability and cost of lithium batteries in electric cars.
Burlington Conservative MP Mike Wallace made the announcement Tuesday at the A.M. Bourns Science building on the university campus.
The Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC) provided $ 2.3 million, with the remainder coming in cash and in-kind donations from General Motors, Heka Electronics and Bruker Ltd.
Dr. Gillian Goward, an associate professor of chemistry at McMaster, said the funding will help her team explore a new avenue of research.
“It’s a new angle for us,” she said. “It’s about why batteries degrade and what processes lead to cell death.”
Goward said researchers have struggled to find ways to increase the overall efficiency of lithium batteries.
Now the team at McMaster will use magnetic resonance technology to examine how the lithium batteries operate while in use.
“Until now most research has focused on exam…………… continues on Hamilton Spectator

Here comes Michigan’s battery industry — but where are the electric vehicle …
News from Crain’s Detroit Business:If gas reaches $ 6 a gallon, consumers will have a problem. If it doesn’t, the state may have a problem. Namely, the half-dozen or so plants manufacturing batteries to power the electric vehicles that nearly nobody is ready to buy.
The road to electric vehicle prosperity seemed smooth, thanks to billions of dollars in government subsidies. But recent hiccups for Fisker Automotive and General Motors Co. reveal cracked pavement inside Michigan’s advanced battery industry.
Fisker’s missteps on critical deadlines and production woes highlight that electric cars aren’t viable — yet.
The U.S. Department of Energy cut off Fisker’s funding after it missed shipment deadlines tied to a $ 528 million loan. Fisker was forced to lay off more than 60 workers and contractors, and an early investor is suing the California startup for fraud involving his $ 210,000 investment.
Beginning in 2009, stimulus dollars surged through the market to propel advancements in electric vehicles. More than $ 2 billion in federal gran…………… continues on Crain’s Detroit Business

Electric cars need a clean energy source, study suggests
News from EarthSky:Could it be that electric cars cause more overall pollution and are more harmful to health than conventional gasoline powered cars? In China, where electricity is generated primarily through the burning of fossil fuels, the answer appears to be yes. A research team from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, has found in China the potential for a more negative overall impact – on pollution and health – from electric cars than from gasoline cars.
Study authors say their results point to electric vehicles being attractive if they are powered by a clean energy source. They also found that electric bikes had the lowest environmental impact in China.
