Panel allows Honda to make IndyCar engine changes
News from Press of Atlantic City:

Honda will be allowed to make changes to the turbochargers on its IndyCar engines after a three-person panel denied an appeal by Chevrolet.

The panel decided at a hearing in Indianapolis on Thursday that Honda can change the compressor cover on its single turbocharger, a move that Chevrolet and its teams were against. The changes should allow Honda to improve the performance of its engines.

IndyCar recently allowed Honda to make the changes but Chevrolet decided to protest, saying the modification would go against some of the series’ rules. It can still appeal the panel’s decision.

“We respect the diligence of the panel appointed to hear the protest and examine the situation,” said Jim Campbell, Chevrolet’s U.S. vice president for performance vehicles and motorsports. “While we are disappointed with today’s decision, we are prepared to continue to compete at the highest level in the IZOD IndyCar Series.”

Chevrolet said it believed the modification wanted by Honda “was contrary to the series rules and asked IndyCar to thoroughl…………… continues on Press of Atlantic City

Fisher’s IndyCar team gets deal with Honda
    News from Beaver County Times:

    Posted: Friday, February 24, 2012 4:34 pm | Updated: 6:01 pm, Fri Feb 24, 2012.

Sarah Fisher finally found an engine deal for her IndyCar team, signing with Honda for the 2012 season.

Fisher’s team will field a car for rookie Josef Newgarden. The season begins with the Grand Prix of St. Petersburg on March 25.

Fisher thanked fellow team owner Bobby Rahal for helping the deal come together. Rahal originally had the rights to two Honda engine lease agreements this season but only plans to field one car. By giving up the rights to a second engine, Rahal opened the door for Fisher’s team to resolve its uncertain engine situation.

In a statement, Fisher says Rahal “personified the definition of a gentleman and sportsman.” Fisher helped out Rahal’s son, Graham, by allowing him to race her car for four races in 2010.

Q&A: Stumbling Saturn might need pro’s advice
    News from The Republic:

QUESTION: We are having problems with our ’95 Saturn SL2. When you start the car it runs for about 25 minutes, then shuts off. We can’t afford to bring it to a dealer or mechanic, and we can’t afford to buy another car, so we need to fix it ourselves. We have replaced the fuel pump, fuel filter and fuel pressure regulator along with the coil packs and ignition module. We cleaned the exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) valve and replaced the powertrain control module. Still, it shuts off after about 25 minutes. We then replaced the catalytic converter, but this still didn’t fix the problem. The car starts and runs fine, but after about 25 minutes it shuts itself down. When we try to start it again, it stumbles and shuts off.

ANSWER: At this point, I can’t help but wonder if a professional shop and its sophisticated testing equipment might have been a good choice.

That said, the “stumbles and shuts off” description of your restart attempts may be a clue. The “stumble” means it’s got spark and some fuel. Installing a fuel pressure gauge and test…………… continues on The Republic

  4. Honda Says Reworking Civic as Part of Plan to Lift Sales by 24%

Honda Says Reworking Civic as Part of Plan to Lift Sales by 24%
    News from BusinessWeek:

Dec. 21 (Bloomberg) — Honda Motor Co. is sprucing up its Civic sedan, which received poor reviews, after less than a year on the market as part of a plan to boost U.S. sales by 24 percent in 2012 for its namesake brand.

Honda will unveil “upgrades” on its 2013-model Civic, going on sale late next year, Tetsuo Iwamura, the automaker’s top North American executive, said in an interview yesterday in Romulus, Michigan. The current Civic failed to receive the “recommended” status its predecessors had from Consumer Reports magazine, which criticized it for a decline in interior quality, choppier ride, and more road noise.

“Building a good car isn’t enough for us, we have to build a great car,” John Mendel, Honda’s executive vice president of sales in the U.S., said in the same interview. “We think we can do better and the customer expects that and we will.”

U.S. sales of the Civic have fallen 13 percent this year to 200,690, according to researcher Autodata Corp. Honda’s U.S. sales declined 5.3 percent through Nove…………… continues on BusinessWeek

  5. Honda recalls 962,000 Fits, CR-Vs worldwide

Posted on September 5th, 2011 by admin

    div class=”txt timestamp” content=”2011-09-05T16:10:54″>updated 9/5/2011 12:10:54 PM ET 2011-09-05T16:10:54

Honda Motor Co. says it will recall a total of 962,000 cars worldwide to fix power windows and computer systems.

Honda will recall 936,000 units of the Fit subcompact, CR-V crossover and Fit Aria in North America, Asia, Europe and Africa, the company said Monday. The Fit is called Jazz in some overseas markets, while the Fit Aria is also known as City.

Honda says the recall was prompted by defects in driver’s-side power window switch units, which could potentially melt and catch fire.

It will also recall 26,000 CR-Z compact hybrids globally due to programming problems with the engine control unit.

There have been no injuries because of the defects, Honda says.

  6. Honda recalling 2.5 million cars, SUVs

Honda is recalling 2.49 million cars, small SUVs and minivans, including its popular Accord sedan, to repair a software problem that could damage the automatic transmission.

The recall includes 1.5 million vehicles in the United States, 760,000 in China and 135,142 in Canada, the automaker said Friday.

Globally, the recall affects four-cylinder Accord sedans for the model years 2005 to 2010.

The company is also recalling vehicles in parts of Europe, the Middle East, South America, Mexico and Puerto Rico. The recall did not affect vehicles sold in Honda’s home Japan market.

In the United States and Canada, the recall also includes the CR-V crossover for the model years 2007 to 2010 as well as the small SUV Element from 2005 to 2008.

Without updating the software, the automatic transmission in these vehicles could be damaged if the driver quickly shifts between gears. That might cause the engine to stall or make it difficult to put the car into park.

  7. Why thieves find the 1994 Honda Accord so irresistible

    By Jessica Mintz, msnbc.com contributor

Reading the 2010 top stolen cars report from the National Insurance Crime Bureau got me to wondering: What is it about the 1994 Honda Accord that thieves find so irresistible?

Certain Accords and Honda Civics from the 1990s, along with the 1989 Toyota Camry, have dominated the list for the past eight years. For the sake of variety, the NICB cuts duplicates from its top-10 lists, says public affairs director Frank Scafidi. It’s possible, then, that another vintage of Accord could have bumped another contender from the list. (The 1996 version was also a very popular target in 2010.)

The 1994 Accord was special, however. That year, Honda revamped the design of the Accord and changed details under the hood. That kind of full model change, as it’s called, would have been accompanied by a big publicity push, said Chris Martin, a Honda spokesman, in an interview.

Thieves are likely interested in mid-90s Accords simply because there are so many of them still on the roads, Martin said. Demand for replacement parts may be keeping shady actors in business.

  8. Honda recalling 1.5 million cars

Posted on August 6th, 2011 by admin

    div id=”ie_dottop” readability=”8″>

Rapid shifts between Drive and Reverse could cause the transmission to malfunction in some Honda models.

NEW YORK (CNNMoney) — Honda is recalling 1.5 million cars in the U.S. to fix a transmission issue.

In some cars, a transmission part can be damaged if the car is shifted quickly between Reverse, Neutral and Drive, as might be done when trying to free a vehicle stuck in snow or mud.

If the part, a secondary shaft bearing, is damaged it can cause the engine to stall. It could also cause the car’s Parking gear mechanism to jam, allowing the car to roll even when the gear selector has been placed in the Park position.

To fix the problem, Honda (HMC) will update transmission control software in the car, reducing the maximum engine speed at which gears can be changed between Drive and Reverse.

The vehicles involved in the recall are model year 2007 through 2010 Honda CR-Vs, 2005 through 2008 Elements and 2004 through 2010 Accords with 4-cylinder engines.

No injuries or deaths have been reported as a result of this problem, Honda said.

  9. Spiders creep into Honda Accords, too

Posted on March 10th, 2011 by admin

span class=”captionname”>Yellow Sac spiders aren’t only infesting Mazdas. It turns out they’ve been found in Hondas, too. By Peter Valdes-Dapena, senior writer

NEW YORK (CNNMoney) — Mazda6 sedans aren’t the only cars with spider issues. Honda issued a Technical Service Bulletin to its dealers in the summer of 2009 for the same problem involving the same species of spider, but decided against issuing a recall.

Mazda recently had to recall 52,000 cars in the U.S. because so-called Yellow Sac spiders were sometimes found nesting in a gasoline tank vent tube. The spider nests obstructed the tube, causing air pressure problems in the gas tank. That sometimes led to cracks that could have caused a fire risk, leading Mazda to issue the safety recall.

The same spiders were found in the same area in 2008 and 2009 model year Honda Accords, but they aren’t leading to gas tank cracks, Honda said.

“It’s just not happening in our cars,” Honda spokeswoman Christina Ra said.

A Technical Service Bulletin warns dealerships about a potential problem, but one that isn’t deemed to be a serious threat to safety. Honda’s bulletin instructs dealers, after clearing out the nest, to install a spri …CNN

  10. Honda, Toyota and Chrysler issue recalls

English physicist, mathematician and astronomer Sir Isaac Newton once famously wrote — with perhaps a touch of false modesty — that “If I have seen a little further it is by standing on the shoulders of giants.”

Thus has the car industry incrementally improved from its primordial horseless carriage beginnings to the magic carpet ride of today’s almost incomprehensibly complex machines with their raft of safety, environmental and convenience devices adding to the basic transportation function.

Here are 10 of the car industry’s most important technological changes.

    1886 Benz

It all began with Karl Benz and his construction of a self-propelled, three-wheel vehicle powered by a single-cylinder 0.75-horsepower engine using a leather belt and two bicycle chains to transmit power to the rear wheels.

However modest this beginning, with its exposed engine parts and whirling bits menacing anyone who examines it too closely, the 1886 Benz launched the industry and was the foundation of today esteemed Mercedes-Benz brand. (Maybe the leather upholstery was an early clue to the company’s luxury intent?)
