Reports of Nissan, Chrysler, GM defects probed

DETROIT — U.S. safety regulators have opened preliminary investigations into consumer complaints about vehicles made by Nissan Motor Co Ltd, Chrysler LLC and General Motors Co that could affect more than 700,000 cars.
A preliminary investigation is the first step in a process that could lead to a recall if regulators determine that a safety issue needs to be addressed by a manufacturer.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said its probe into an estimated 440,000 Nissan Altima cars from the 2007 and 2008 model years concerned a possible leak in the brake master cylinder that could reduce the effectiveness of the brakes.
NHTSA said it had received 20 complaints from Altima drivers. Of these, two alleged a reduction in brake effectiveness while 18 reported only illumination of the brake warning light.
The agency said it was also investigating Chrysler’s Jeep Wrangler from the 2007 and 2008 model years, potentially affecting 222,500 vehicles, over airbag light illumination indicating an airbag clockspring failure.

Nissan Leaf: 2011 World Car of The Year
Posted on April 22nd, 2011 by admin
a href=”http://money.cnn.com/galleries/2011/autos/1104/gallery.2011_new_york_auto_show/index.html”>The Leaf, Nissan’s zero emission electric car, is the 2011 World Car of the Year.
NEW YORK (CNNMoney) — The all-electric Nissan Leaf was named the 2011 World Car of The Year at the New York Auto Show on Thursday.
The Leaf, which went on sale in the United States in December and is also available in Japan and Europe, beat the BMW 5-Series and the Audi A8 for the top spot.
“It is a great joy that the world’s first, mass-marketed electric vehicle, the Nissan Leaf, has won the prestigious award,” said Nissan Chairman and CEO Carlos Ghosn.
Ghosn has been an outspoken booster of electric vehicles, predicting that they will account for 10% of the global auto market by 2020. Nissan plans to release it in other global markets in 2012.
By then, almost every major automaker plans to have at least one plug-in car on the market. Toyota alone will have three, including the Rav4 EV SUV and the Prius plug-in.
General Motors’ Chevrolet Volt went on the market at almost the same time as the Leaf and …CNN

Nissan will take new US orders for electric Leaf

div class=”txt timestamp” content=”2011-04-20T15:15:40″>updated 4/20/2011 11:15:40 AM ET 2011-04-20T15:15:40
NEW YORK — Nissan Motor Co. will resume taking U.S. reservations for its Leaf electric car on May 1, Nissan Americas Chairman Carlos Tavares said Wednesday.
Tavares said Leaf production remains on track despite the March 11 earthquake that devastated Japan and briefly closed the plant where the Leaf is made. The first shipment of Leafs made after the earthquake is due to arrive in Los Angeles next week, he said. There are 127 Leafs on that ship.
Nissan stopped taking U.S. reservations for the Leaf last September when it reached 20,000 reservations. The Leaf went on sale in December and the company has delivered around 500 Leafs to U.S. buyers so far, Tavares said.
Tavares acknowledged some complaints about the long wait for a Leaf, which is currently four to seven months in the U.S. He said the company rolled out the vehicle slowly so it could iron out any problems, although the launch hasn’t been trouble-free. Nissan recently told all 5,300 Leaf owners worldwide that the car has a software glitch that can keep it from starting. Nissan has offered to fix the problem at owners’ homes or offices in addition to at dealerships.

Nissan Leaf: 3 days, no plug
Posted on April 12th, 2011 by admin
span class=”captionname”>Yes, you can drive several days without charging an electric car. But watch your charge level.
NEW YORK (CNNMoney) — By the time I got in the Nissan Leaf that I’d be driving for the weekend, I already knew I had a problem. I would be driving my family in an electric car, but I had nowhere to plug it in.
I’d done the math, though, and I figured we’d be OK. The Leaf’s got a 100-mile battery. I needed 10 miles each way to safely make it home and back from my office. That left 80 miles and we had no long trips planned. A cake walk.
Except the car, delivered with a full battery, showed only 70 miles of range. The Leaf had been brought to my office on a flatbed truck (Yes, carrying an electric car on a flatbed truck does somewhat diminish the environmental benefits, but Nissan wanted to give me full use of that charge.) I should have had 100 miles, or at least 80, I thought. But, no, I was getting 70.
Well, I figured, this just means I’ll have to take it very, very easy. Like most electric and hybrid cars, the Leaf has visual aids to coach you in efficient driving techniques. When you take it easy on the “gas” and brakes, tiny white pine trees appear on the dashboard display, growing layer by layer like …CNN
