From production to product, Rosslyn plant thinks green
News from Creamer Media’s Engineering News:BMW South Africa’s (BMW SA’s) plant in Rosslyn has, since 2007, cut electricity consumption per 3 Series produced by 25%, waste by 50%, carbon emissions by 25% and water use by 50%, culminating in savings of R48.5-million.
This year, the plant has started production of the F30, or new 3 Series, with Rosslyn responsible for 25% of all 3 Series production in the world, says BMW SA technical and logistics director Johannes Gingelseder.
Around 80% of BMW SA’s production of more than 50 000 units was exported last year, with one in every second car assembled outside Pretoria going to the US.
Yearly production of the new 3 Series is scheduled to exceed 90 000 units.
It is not only the BMW plant that has seen substantial savings in its environmental footprint – the same is true for the 3 Series.
While emissions and fuel consumption have dropped on the newly launched model range, power and performance remain as before, or even better, indicating that no one can yet perform the funeral rites on the internal combus…………… continues on Creamer Media’s Engineering News

Q&A: Stumbling Saturn might need pro’s advice
News from The Republic:QUESTION: We are having problems with our ’95 Saturn SL2. When you start the car it runs for about 25 minutes, then shuts off. We can’t afford to bring it to a dealer or mechanic, and we can’t afford to buy another car, so we need to fix it ourselves. We have replaced the fuel pump, fuel filter and fuel pressure regulator along with the coil packs and ignition module. We cleaned the exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) valve and replaced the powertrain control module. Still, it shuts off after about 25 minutes. We then replaced the catalytic converter, but this still didn’t fix the problem. The car starts and runs fine, but after about 25 minutes it shuts itself down. When we try to start it again, it stumbles and shuts off.
ANSWER: At this point, I can’t help but wonder if a professional shop and its sophisticated testing equipment might have been a good choice.
That said, the “stumbles and shuts off” description of your restart attempts may be a clue. The “stumble” means it’s got spark and some fuel. Installing a fuel pressure gauge and test…………… continues on The Republic

News from Indian Express:The falling rupee is leading auto-parts suppliers to shift some production to India to reduce their import bills.
Component makers at the ongoing Auto Expo said the depreciation in the currency, which dropped 19 per cent against the dollar in 2011, had increased costs and hurt their profits during the year.
Spending on imports of automobile parts increased by 22.1 per cent to Rs 10,507.8 crore in the six months to October, commerce ministry data shows.
Car makers face fewer difficulties because they typically have larger turnovers and are more likely to be hedged against currency fluctuations. High interest rates and slowing demand have also hit smaller component makers before vehicle manufacturers.
High import duties, which can be nearly 50 per cent of production costs, also raise companies’ expenses.
Sona Koyo, which makes steering systems, said it was trying to save on outsourcing costs after revising its market growth forecast from between 15 and 18 per cent to within 2 and 4 per cent.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Toyota Motor Corp. said Monday that it’s inevitable the company will be forced to shut down all of its North American factories because of parts shortages due to the earthquake that hit Japan.
The temporary shutdowns are likely to take place later this month, affecting 25,000 workers, but no layoffs are expected, spokesman Mike Goss said.
Just how long the shutdowns last or whether all 13 of Toyota’s factories will be affected at the same is unknown and depends on when parts production can restart in Japan, Goss said.
So far the North American plants have been using parts in their inventory or relying on those that were shipped before the earthquake, Goss said. But those supplies are running low.
“We’re going to get to a point this month where that gap in the pipeline starts to show up. So we’ll have to suspend production for a while,” he said.
A March 11 earthquake and tsunami damaged auto parts plants in Northeastern Japan, causing shortages that idled most of the nation’s car production. Japan’s daily auto output has fallen by more than 500,000 vehicles since the disaster, says Scotiabank Senior E …MSNBC

GM to shut plant amid shortage of Japanese parts

NEW YORK (CNNMoney) — General Motors has suspended production at a facility in Louisiana due to a shortage of parts stemming from the natural disaster in Japan, the automaker said Thursday.
The Shreveport Assembly plant, where GM makes the Chevrolet Colorado and GMC Canyon, will be closed for the week of March 21, according to a statement.
GM (GM) said it will resume production at the plant “as soon as possible,” adding that it currently has “sufficient vehicles to meet customer demand.” All other GM plants in North America will continue to run as normal, the company said.
Tom Wilkinson, a GM spokesman, declined to specify which parts are in short supply. He said the automaker hopes to resume normal operations soon, but could not say when. “We’re really evaluating the situation day by day,” he said.
Japan was hit by a devastating tsunami on March 11 after one of the largest earthquakes ever recorded struck off the island nation’s coastline.
While the disaster may not have a long-term impact on Japan’s economy, many investors are worried about short-term supply disruptions of Japanese goods, inc …CNN

Japanese automakers extend plant shutdowns

WASHINGTON — Japanese auto companies on Wednesday extended shutdowns of car-assembly plants affected by the country’s devastating earthquake and tsunami, but in a sign of progress, some parts factories in Japan plan to resume production later this week.
Toyota Motor Corp., the world’s biggest automaker, said it will extend production halts at its car plants through March 22, affecting about 95,000 vehicles. The company halted production beginning March 14.
But Toyota will resume production on Thursday at factories that make replacement parts for vehicles already on the road. And it will restart plants on March 21 that make parts for overseas factories.
Japan is the world’s second-largest producer of automobiles after China, and is a top trade partner with the United States, which imported 1.2 million vehicles from Japan in 2009. The earthquake, tsunami and radiation from damaged nuclear power plants have raised concerns of falling supplies of high-mileage cars made only in Japan. Those models include the Honda Fit and Toyota Yaris and hybrids such as the Toyota Prius.
