  1. VW recalls 30,000 Jettas to fix long tailpipes

Volkswagen is recalling more than 30,000 Jetta sedans from the 2011 and 2012 model years because the tailpipes can stick out too far and burn people.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says on its website that stainless steel exhaust pipe tips installed at ports of entry and dealerships can stick out farther than the factory-installed tailpipes.

If the tips are hot, people could be burned on the legs.

Documents on the website say Volkswagen received complaints of burns in July and began investigating. Volkswagen said Monday that fewer than 10 people have complained of burns, but a specific number wasn’t available.

Dealers will inspect the cars to see if the exhaust tips are too long and replace them free of charge if necessary.

Honda Motor Co. says it will recall a total of 962,000 cars worldwide to fix power windows and computer systems.

Honda will recall 936,000 units of the Fit subcompact, CR-V crossover and Fit Aria in North America, Asia, Europe and Africa, the company said Monday. The Fit is called Jazz in some overseas markets, while the Fit Aria is also known as City.

Honda says the recall was prompted by defects in driver’s-side power window switch units, which could potentially melt and catch fire.

It will also recall 26,000 CR-Z compact hybrids globally due to programming problems with the engine control unit.

There have been no injuries because of the defects, Honda says.

General Motors Co is recalling 16,198 Chevrolet Impala and Buick LaCrosse cars in the United States and Canada to address sensor and power steering problems, the automaker said Friday.

The company said it knew of no injuries or crashes related to the two recalls.

GM is recalling 11,905 2012 Impalas to inspect for proper installation of the power steering hose. The company said the hose, if misrouted, could be damaged and spray fluid onto hot engine parts to create a potential for a fire.

The Detroit-based company said the defect was discovered during production at the Oshawa, Ontario, plant, where the car is built.

GM said dealers will replace the hose and add abrasion protection if the hose is not properly routed.

Of the total Impalas affected by the recall, 10,334 are in the United States and the rest in Canada.

GM also said it is recalling 4,293 2012 LaCrosses to reprogram the electronic brake control module because an incorrect calibration may cause the electronic stability system to improperl …MSNBC

  4. Ford recalls 1 million trucks for faulty gas tanks

Ford is recalling over a million F-series and Lincoln Blackwood trucks because straps that hold up the gas tank could rust and break.

NEW YORK (CNNMoney) — Ford Motor Co. is recalling 1.1 million full-size pickups in the U.S. because straps securing the gas tank to the vehicle could rust, allowing the tank to come loose and drag on the ground.

The recalled trucks include model year 1997 through 2003 F-150 trucks, some model year 1997 through 1999 F-250′s, and some 2002 to 2003 Lincoln Blackwood trucks — a luxury version of the F-150.

The trucks being recalled are in states with cold climates where road salts are commonly used. The salts can hasten corrosion of fuel tank straps that hold up the gasoline tank.

Ford (F, Fortune 500) is aware of three fires and one injury that have resulted from the problem, Ford spokesman Wes Sherwood said.

Ford dealers will replace the gas tank straps on recalled trucks free of charge, installing straps made from a more rust-resistant material.

The Ford F-series truck has been the best-selling U.S. passenger vehicle for nearly 30 years. …CNN

  7. Ford reverses itself, recalls 1.2 million F-150 trucks

span class=”captionname”>In February, Ford called a large recall over unwanted airbag depoyments overkill. Now, the automaker has changed its mind. By Peter Valdes-Dapena, senior writer

NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) — Ford Motor Co. is recalling almost 1.2 million full-sized pickups for a problem in which airbags can go off when not needed, expanding a much smaller recall it had instituted months earlier.

Ford recalled 144,000 trucks over the problem in February but the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said at the time it was continuing to investigate the issue and might demand that the automaker issue a much larger recall, which Ford is now doing.

In a statement, Ford said it is issuing the larger recall “to reassure our customers of our safety commitment.”

The recall applies to 1.19 million trucks, mostly Ford F-150s built between 2003 and 2006 but also some 2006 model year Lincoln Mark LTs.

The problem is caused by an improperly placed wire in the steering wheel, where the airbag is housed. Insulating material on the wire can rub off, causing a short circuit that can lead to warning lights and inadvertent deployment.

  9. Honda, Toyota and Chrysler issue recalls

    li class=”intro” readability=”10″>

English physicist, mathematician and astronomer Sir Isaac Newton once famously wrote — with perhaps a touch of false modesty — that “If I have seen a little further it is by standing on the shoulders of giants.”

Thus has the car industry incrementally improved from its primordial horseless carriage beginnings to the magic carpet ride of today’s almost incomprehensibly complex machines with their raft of safety, environmental and convenience devices adding to the basic transportation function.

Here are 10 of the car industry’s most important technological changes.

    1886 Benz

It all began with Karl Benz and his construction of a self-propelled, three-wheel vehicle powered by a single-cylinder 0.75-horsepower engine using a leather belt and two bicycle chains to transmit power to the rear wheels.

However modest this beginning, with its exposed engine parts and whirling bits menacing anyone who examines it too closely, the 1886 Benz launched the industry and was the foundation of today esteemed Mercedes-Benz brand. (Maybe the leather upholstery was an early clue to the company’s luxury intent?)

  10. Toyota recalls 2.17 million more cars

Posted on February 26th, 2011 by admin

Toyota is adding more models of the Rav4 SUV to a recall for potential floormat entrapment. By Peter Valdes-Dapena, senior writerNEW YORK (CNNMoney) — Toyota is recalling 2.2 million vehicles to correct problems that can cause gas pedals to become stuck in floormats.

In one problem, the gas pedal can get stuck in the plastic pad part of the driver’s side floormat, if the floormat isn’t replaced properly after it’s removed, Toyota said in its announcement. The automaker is recalling 20,000 2006 and early 2007 model year Lexus GS300 and GS350 All-Wheel cars to fix this problem.

In other cars, a retention clip used to secure a piece on the vehicle’s center console can come loose and interfere with the gas pedal.

To fix that issue, Toyota is recalling 372,000 model year 2004 through early 2007 Lexus RX 330, RX 350 and RX 400h SUVs, as well as approximately 397,000 2004 through 2006 Highlander and Highlander Hybrid SUVs.

Also, Toyota announced it is expanding a 2009 recall in which gas pedals could become trapped on extra-thick floo ……… Read more from CNN
