He won America’s most prestigious 24-hour race as an underdog entrant less than three months ago, and now Michael Shank hopes to keep the underdog streak alive by achieving his life-long dream of fielding a car in America’s most famous auto racing event.
As a product of the American open-wheel scene, Shank, a native of Ohio, transitioned from the cockpit to team ownership in the late 1990s, fielding F2000 and Atlantic teams before making the switch to sports cars in the GRAND-AM Rolex Series. Since establishing himself as one of the most respected team owners in the GRAND-AM, Shank has been on a quest to add a full-time program IndyCar program and is tantalizing close to…………… continues on SPEEDtv.com

News from Washington Post:
The 2012 New York Auto Show opened to the media Wednesday, and HighGearMedia.com gives a rundown of some of the vehicles they saw:
2013 SRT Viper: Undoubtedly the most anticipated car of the show, if not the year, the new 2013 SRT Viper has finally been let loose. The important numbers for the new Viper are its peak output of 640 horsepower and 600 pound-feet of torque, derived from an 8.4-liter V-10, 100-pound weight saving over its predecessor, and expected 0-60 mph time of less than four seconds. 2013 Toyota Avalon at the 2012 New York Auto Show
News from Chicago Tribune:
David Thomas Cars.com
10:50 a.m. CDT, April 5, 2012
- Competes with: Hyundai Azera, Chevy Impala, Nissan Maxima
- Looks like: Toyota tried really hard to make the Avalon cool
- Drivetrain: 268-hp, 3.5-liter V-6 engine; front or all-wheel drive; six-speed automatic transmission
- Hits dealerships: Late 2012
The current Toyota Avalon is a large, comfortable sedan that can get anyone from place to place in a serene, spacious environment. That combination may seem attractive on paper, but it doesn’t help sell cars it seems. Toyota took the Avalon back to the drawing board to make it more attractive to the eye, something the current Avalon isn’t.

Chevy hopes new Impala will revive big-car sales
News from San Jose Mercury News:
General Motors Co.’s Chevrolet brand is trying to resuscitate sales of big sedans with a sleek, new version of the Impala.
The family hauler, which mostly sells to rental car companies, is the last model in Chevy’s lineup to be revamped. When it hits showrooms early next year, it will replace an Impala that was last updated in 2005.
The 10th generation Impala gets much of its design from other Chevrolets. Its body slopes from back to front. It has high doors, low-profile side windows and large wheels. The company says the car is quiet. It has sound-deadening insulation and laminated glass in the windshield and windows. The roomy interior has upgraded materials.
Chevrolet thought about changing the Impala’s name, but decided it had significant recognition after 50 years on the market and more than 16 million in sales.
Here are more details about the new car, on display April 6-15 at the New York International Auto Show:
UNDER THE HOOD: Buyers can choose from three engines, all mated to a six-speed automatic transmission. A 2.5-lit…………… continues on San Jose Mercury News

Infiniti Zero Emission Concept: New York Auto Show Live Shots
News from Washington Post:
A day before Infiniti’s New York Auto Show press conference, the wraps were pulled to tease the luxury brand’s show concept.
What’s been released so far is that this concept is an all-electric four-door sedan, based on Nissan Leaf underpinnings; expect seating for five, and a well-packaged luxury-car interior that will be in most ways a design about-face compared to the Leaf.
Unlike the 2009 Infiniti Essence Concept, which was a design concept pointing to the brand’s future direction, this concept is expected to be a thinly veiled glimpse of a production Infiniti all-electric sedan–to be assembled alongside the Nissan Leaf in Smyrna, Tennessee.
Especially of note is the rather large grille which, although unnecessary in an electric car, may be there simply to fit in w…………… continues on Washington Post

2014 Chevrolet Impala at the 2012 New York Auto Show
News from Chicago Tribune:
- Competes with: Hyundai Azera, Toyota Avalon, Ford Taurus
- Looks like: A stylish sedan, but not a rear-wheel-drive successor to the Pontiac G8 as some might have hoped
- Drivetrain: 182-hp, 2.4-liter four-cylinder with eAssist mild-hybrid system; 195-hp, 2.5-liter four-cylinder or 303-hp, 3.6-liter V-6 with a six-speed automatic transmission; front-wheel drive
- Hits dealerships: Early 2013
Chevrolet has redesigned its Impala sedan for the 2014 model year. If you were hoping to see this full-size car swap its front-drive layout for a performance-oriented rear-drive setup, you’re going to be disappointed because the car you see here, which hits dealerships in early 2013, still has front-wheel drive. However, it does promise better fuel efficiency than its predecessor with the availability of GM’s eAssist mild-hybrid system. Pricing information hasn’t been released.

Chicago Auto Show: Muscle cars still have the power
News from Chicago Tribune:
There was plenty of chatter over the new electric and hybrid offerings at Friday’s opening of the Chicago Auto Show at McCormick Place. But off in the wings, the throaty roars of unapologetically powerful V-8 engines more than drowned out the buzz.
Throwbacks in the age of high-tech, fuel-efficient engineering, a new wave of muscle cars from the Detroit Three is proving that for many attendees, miles per hour is still a lot sexier than miles per gallon.
The Ford display prominently featured new gas-electric and plug-in hybrid versions of its 2013 Fusion, but it was the 650-horsepower, 200 mph 2013 Shelby GT500 that turned more heads. A noisy, floor-rattling demonstration probably didn’t hurt.

Engine options fire up Chicago show
News from nwitimes.com:
Performance is a hot button for many consumers at this year’s Chicago Auto Show.
Today’s technology has altered buyers’ thinking on performance offerings that exist in virtually every market segment.
Hot performance vehicles offered in the compact segment have turbocharged four–cylinder engines priced under $ 20,000. A number of the 2012 vehicles on the show floor year are strong head–turners with outstanding performance worthy of consumer consideration.
One notable car in the Hyundai display is the cool looking and functional 2012 Hyundai Veloster.
Introduced as a 2012 model, enthusiasts voiced concerns about its “all show and no go” performance capabilities. All those performance issues have been corrected in the 2013 model with the addition of a new 1.6-liter turbocharged direct injection engine delivering 201 horsepower bringing true justice to its dual exhaust placement.
Scion has also ramped up its performance reputation with the 2013 Scion FR–S, a compact coupe on sale this spring. FR–S stands for “front engine, r…………… continues on nwitimes.com

Car lovers impressed with auto show exhibits, upbeat about where industry is going
News from Detroit Free Press:
As Molly Hutchison, 15, slid into a new model Volkswagen Beetle, her mother let out a gasp.
“Oh, it’s completely you. Your dad needs to see this,” said Michelle Hutchison, 49, looking around for her husband, Bob Hutchison.
The Hutchisons, from Fowlerville, were among thousands at at Cobo Center on Saturday, the first public day of the North American International Auto Show.
The mood seemed electric after several months of good news in the automotive industry, including word that the auto show signed a five-year deal to stay in the renovated convention center. Attendance Saturday reached 92,106, the highest opening day in five years, and Friday’s annual Charity Preview raised $ 3 million, with nearly 12,000 tickets sold, organizers said in a news release.
“I think the economy’s growing, and I think people are starting to feel good,” said Michelle Hutchison, who was helping her soon-to-be teen driver shop for a car that was safe and had good fuel mileage.
Others echoed her sentiments of excitement and potential.

Boy with cancer has a day with monster trucks
News from Detroit Free Press:
Today was the ultimate day of awesome for Steve Dreffs, 10, as he met his monster truck idols at Ford Field, thanks to the Make-A-Wish Foundation.
Steve, born with a cancer that invades his thyroid and other hormone-producing organs, could barely contain himself as he crawled around the insides of Gravedigger, a truck on giant wheels driven by Randy Brown.
“Hey, does the engine need to have a cover on it?” said Steve from the cab, before calling for his sister, Kari, 9, and his cousin, Carter, 3, to join him some 10 feet off the ground.
It was a day of fun and forgetting for Steve, who along with his sister, battles the same disease that claimed their grandmother and is slowly claiming their mother.
Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia Type II B is a cancer in which small tumors form in the thyroid and adrenal glands of those affected. Often, sufferers have small tumors in their mouths. It’s hereditary, and the two siblings have had their thyroids taken out as a precaution against thyroid cancer.
Their great-aunt, Patricia Dreff…………… continues on Detroit Free Press
