Chevrolet Volt sales haven’t gotten out of first gear yet, but GM says not to worry. Things are just getting going.

NEW YORK (CNNMoney) — General Motors insists it will sell 10,000 Chevrolet Volts in the U.S. by the end of this year, but as of now, the numbers don’t look good.

By the end of August, the last time GM publicly announced its sales, about 3,500 Volts had been sold. To reach 10,000, GM will need to average about 1,700 Volts per month for the last four months of the year.

In August, GM sold 300 gasoline/electric Volts. Meanwhile, Nissan sold over 1,300 of its all-electric Nissan Leaf that month. In fact, the Leaf was the fifth best-selling of all alternative fuel vehicle that month, including hybrids and diesel cars, according to Intellichoice.com.

September Volt sales will be revealed Monday when GM reports its monthly sales tally.

Not to worry, GM spokesman Rob Peterson said.

“I don’t see any problem with reaching our goal,” he said.

The reason he gives is that GM (GM, Fortune 500)’s Detroit factory is still just clearing its throat. The real show starts now.

The 1969 Camaro has been voted best Chevy of all time.

As part of their 100 year celebration Chevrolet set up a weird bracket style voting system in an attempt to pick the best car the company ever produced. After 124,368 votes were cast the 1969 Camaro came out victorious. Second place went to the 1970 Chevrolet Chevelle SS.

I like ’69 Camaros and ’70 Chevelles just as much as the next guy, in many cases more than the next guy, but are these two cars really the best cars Chevrolet ever made? They’re popular and they are certainly cool, but I’m not sold on these choices. The 1963 Corvette Stingray that was voted fourth would probably be my number one. The new ZR1 is excellent and anything fro …MSNBC

  3. It’s time to stop worrying about Toyota

Believe it or not, he’s got something to smile about.

FORTUNE — Akio Toyoda must feel like he is jinxed. Since becoming president of his family’s company in 2009, he has been buried under an avalanche of troubles — the worst skein of bad news in the company’s history.

First there was the global financial crisis, when as one of his first acts as president, he apologized to shareholders for the company’s losses.

Then in August the recall imbroglio hit. Consumer complaints about unintended acceleration and other safety problems, magnified by the media’s megaphone, led to the recall of 24 million vehicles worldwide, and seriously dented the company’s long-held and hard won reputation for quality.

While Toyoda was still dealing with the aftermath, the April 2011 earthquake and tsunami shattered Japan’s economy and disrupted automobile production.

There will be no relief in the short term. Be prepared for a torrent of stories over the next several months about declining sales, shrinking market share, and falling profits.

Last week, for instance, it was breathlessly reported that …CNN

  4. Ford sales top GM for first time in over a decade

span class=”captionname”>Ford Motor’s U.S. sales topped General Motors in March. By Chris Isidore, senior writer

NEW YORK (CNNMoney) — Ford Motor Co. topped rival General Motors in U.S. sales in March, grabbing the No. 1 spot for the first time in nearly 13 years.

Ford (F, Fortune 500) sales rose 19% from a year ago to 212,777 vehicles, while GM (GM) posted a 10% rise to 206,621. It is the first time since a strike shutdown GM production in July and August of 1998 that Ford has been able to move ahead of GM.

Executives at both GM and Ford declined to comment on the change in position.

“I don’t think we’ve been all that interested in sales races,” said George Pipas, Ford’s director of sales analysis.

Jessica Caldwell, senior analyst with Edmunds.com, said Ford’s sales were helped by increased incentives that attracted buyers. But she said the company also benefited from a lineup of fuel efficient models as gas prices topped $ 3.60 a gallon during the month.

  5. Crunch time for Chrysler-Fiat partnership

Posted on March 12th, 2011 by admin

p class=”i1″>Visitors to this week’s 2011 Geneva Motor Show are getting their first glimpse of the all-new Thema, the long-awaited replacement for the Lancia brand’s flagship sedan.

The look is bold and elegant, but there’s something about it that doesn’t quite fit in with the rest of the line-up for Fiat’s long-struggling mid-luxury brand. That’s not surprising, since the Thema, minus the Lancia badge, is also making its debut in the United States as the new Chrysler 300.

This year’s Geneva show highlights the dramatic global restructuring Chrysler and Fiat are undertaking, as they begin to blend their operations with jointly-developed products sold under both of their various brand names. It’s a vital step for both makers, but if either gets it wrong it could consign both Chrysler and Fiat to oblivion.
