News from USA TODAY:By Alisa Priddle, USA TODAY and the Detroit Free Press
The federal safety investigation into post-crash fires in Chevrolet Volt batteries formally closed today, the car got a clean bill of health.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration posted its defect investigations results late Friday saying the investigation, which opened Nov. 25, is now officially closed.
NHTSA released a statement, analysis of its battery testing, fire incident reports and guidance for emergency responders late Friday in announcing the conclusion of its investigation.
The statement read: “The agency’s investigation has concluded that no discernible defect trend exists and that the vehicle modifications recently developed by General Motors reduce the potential for battery intrusion resulting from side impacts.
“Based on the available data, NHTSA does not believe that Chevy Volts or other elec…………… continues on USA TODAY

Chevrolet Volt sales haven’t gotten out of first gear yet, but GM says not to worry. Things are just getting going.
NEW YORK (CNNMoney) — General Motors insists it will sell 10,000 Chevrolet Volts in the U.S. by the end of this year, but as of now, the numbers don’t look good.
By the end of August, the last time GM publicly announced its sales, about 3,500 Volts had been sold. To reach 10,000, GM will need to average about 1,700 Volts per month for the last four months of the year.
In August, GM sold 300 gasoline/electric Volts. Meanwhile, Nissan sold over 1,300 of its all-electric Nissan Leaf that month. In fact, the Leaf was the fifth best-selling of all alternative fuel vehicle that month, including hybrids and diesel cars, according to Intellichoice.com.
September Volt sales will be revealed Monday when GM reports its monthly sales tally.
Not to worry, GM spokesman Rob Peterson said.
“I don’t see any problem with reaching our goal,” he said.
The reason he gives is that GM (GM, Fortune 500)’s Detroit factory is still just clearing its throat. The real show starts now.
Up to now, the Volt has been available for sale in only seve …CNN

A new study suggests that potential buyers are rapidly losing interest in the Chevy Volt — GM’s much-vaunted plug-in hybrid vehicle.DETROIT — Is the Chevrolet Volt running out of juice?
Even as the maker begins its long-promised production ramp-up, a new study suggests that potential buyers are rapidly losing interest in the plug-in hybrid vehicle.
Introduced last December, Volt is one of the first new vehicles to test the potential market for electric propulsion. It has been going head-to-head with Nissan’s pure battery-electric Leaf. Sal …MSNBC

Luxury Volt: GM to build electric Cadillac

GM will build a production version of its Cadillac Converj Concept to be called the Cadillac ELR.
NEW YORK (CNNMoney) — GM said Wednesday that it will go forward with plans to build a production model of an electric Cadillac luxury coupe.
The Converj Concept, which was first presented at the 2009 Detroit Auto Show, will be called the Cadillac ELR.
The Cadillac ELR will be GM’s luxury version of the Volt.
“The concept generated instant enthusiasm,” Vice President-Cadillac Marketing Don Butler said. “Like other milestone Cadillac models of the past, the ELR will offer something not otherwise present — the combination of electric propulsion with striking design and the fun of luxury coupe driving.”
The vehicle, which is currently in development, will be powered by a lithium-ion battery, an electric drive unit, and a four-cylinder engine-generator similar to the Chevy Volt. The Cadillac ELR will run primarily on electricity — saving consumers the cost of gasoline and reducing emissions.
Specific details about performance and price have yet to be announced.

Chevy Volt newest New York City police car

The Chevrolt Volt will soon be on parking ticket duty in the Big Apple.
NEW YORK (CNNMoney) — The New York City Police Department has a new cruiser that will be silently plying the city streets very soon.
Among 70 new electrically-driven vehicles purchased by the City of New York will be 50 Chevrolet Volts that will be used for, among other things, police work.
The Volts won’t be chasing down bank robbers — at least not yet. They’ll be used by traffic enforcement agents who cruise the city’s streets writing parking tickets.
The Volt will be the first electric car used by the New York City Police Department, although the department already uses a number of hybrid cars and electric scooters.
General Motors (GM, Fortune 500), which makes the Chevrolet Volt, calls it an “extended-range electric vehicle.” It can travel up to 35 miles on a fully charged battery, according to EPA estimates. After that, a gasoline engine generates power for continued driving.
The city also purchased 10 …CNN

GM offers cheaper Volt

With the Chevrolet Volt becoming available in all 50 states, GM is introducing a cheaper entry level model. But prices for most versions of the car will go up.
NEW YORK (CNNMoney) — General Motors announced Friday a cheaper, stripped-down version of its Chevrolet Volt plug-in hybrid for the 2012 model year.
The base price of a 2011 Volt is $ 41,000 while the base price of the 2012 Volt will be a little lower: $ 39,995. To make up for that $ 1,005 price drop, the base Volt will no longer have navigation — although it will still have the computer touch-screen — and it won’t have the upmarket Bose stereo.
With order banks opening across the nation, Volt prices will be going up, not down when comparing similarly equipped models.
For example, the price of a fully loaded 2012 Volt will be $ 46,265. That’s almost $ 1,600 more than last year.
“It’s just ordinary price increases,” GM spokesman Rob Peterson said.
These prices do not include an available $ 7,500 federal tax credit for purchasing the car or any state or local tax incentives. GM (GM, …CNN

Ford’s C-Max hatchback will only be available in the U.S. as a hybrid or plug-in hybrid.
NEW YORK (CNNMoney) — Ford will soon produce a competitor to General Motors’ Chevrolet Volt.
The new van-like compact car, due out next year, will be available in the U.S. in two hybrid versions. One of those, the C-Max Energi, will be a plug-in hybrid with capabilities similar to those of GM’s (GM, Fortune 500) Volt but with a much longer total driving range. The other version, the C-Max Hybrid, will be a standard hybrid, similar to the Toyota (TOYOF) Prius or Ford’s (F, Fortune 500) Escape Hybrid< …CNN

GM to boost Volt production

GM is temporarily the factory where the Chevrolet Volt is built as it prepares for larger production volumes.
NEW YORK (CNNMoney) — General Motors is preparing to greatly increase production of the Chevrolet Volt as it prepares to begin selling the Detroit-made plug-in hybrid across the United States as well as in China and Europe.
Up to now, the Volt has been available only in California, New York, Connecticut, New Jersey and Texas, Michigan and the Washington D.C. area. GM (GM, Fortune 500) announced in January that the car would be available in all 50 states by the end of 2011, earlier than originally planned.
But, in the near term, U.S. customers who want to buy a Volt may be out of luck. GM is shutting down the Detroit-Hamtramck factory that makes the car for four weeks as it installs new machinery to prepare for faster production.
“Coupled with already low dealer inventories and strong demand, the suspension of production will result in limited availability and reduced sales in June …CNN

From the Chevy Volt’s driver’s seat we can glimpse the electric car’s future. We can taste it, and we can even experience it to a degree.
